Douglas County Library adult patrons can act locally and think globally by joining one of four 2009 Great Decisions discussion groups. The Philip S. Miller Library (Castle Rock) and Highlands Ranch Library will each host daytime and evening groups. Each group will meet 9 times, first to establish the coming agenda and then eight times to discuss specific topics. Registration is required and it is inclusive for all eight sessions, no drop-ins and no single sessions.

In an effort to reduce costs, we will no longer provide plastic bags. Please bring your own bag or purchase a reusable bag for $1 plus tax.

Food bank pantries around Douglas County are empty. In an effort to help restock the shelves, all Douglas County Libraries including the bookmobile will waive library fines in exchange for non-perishable food items from Monday, September 22 until Monday, October 20. This offer does not include charges related to lost or damaged items.

Food banks are especially in need of canned meats, pasta, rice, and boxed dinners. The libraries will collect the food and then deliver it to the food bank in their area. You may drop off the food at the Bookmobile or any of the following branches of Douglas County Libraries:

Be an informed voter – come to Douglas County Libraries Truth Behind the Talk where 9News reporter Adam Schrager will show you how to sort through the jargon of politics to find the truth. Learn about how Schrager’s "Truth Test" holds politicians accountable for what they say.

Participants are encouraged to bring copies of political mailings for the group to discuss. Registration required.

For adults in our community who would like to reach out by supporting the adult literacy programs as a volunteer. Volunteers help students learn English, prepare for the GED or citizenship test, or read.

Training will include:

• Volunteer support
• Adult learning theory
• Tutor training

Douglas County Libraries has formed a “partnership for life” with Bonfils Blood Center and will be holding blood drives throughout 2008. Bonfils needs 4,200 blood donations weekly to meet the needs of the community and to be prepared for unexpected events.
